To start, we built our suites and cabins with sustainability in mind, from using locally sourced and recycled building materials, to installing a bio-septic tank. But we know that sustainability is also about our daily choices! That’s why we’re constantly looking for environmentally friendly solutions for daily life at Seaside Tribe, from using natural cleaning products to working towards being plastic-free.
We’ve heard from many of our guests that sustainability is important to them, as well, so we thought we’d share what we’re doing to protect our environment with you (as well as some ideas of how you can help!).
From the very beginning, we knew that we wanted community and sustainability to be at the heart of the Seaside Tribe. Adi began designing our space during a 6-month trip to Switzerland, spending his spare time googling about building design and learning how to digitally-render his & Irene’s vision.
We pictured a beautiful tropical garden, with only local plants, and spaces filled with personal, local touches. It just made sense to use locally sourced materials and recycled materials where possible. In fact, almost all the furniture and décor were handcrafted by Adi’s father using recycled boat timber, bamboo, and driftwood.
We’ve done our best to make each of the Seaside Tribe’s rooms sustainable without sacrificing comfort. The roof of your room is insulated with a layer of thermal foil, so the room temperature will stay fairly even throughout the day. This way, you can reduce air-conditioner use as the room will stay cool! The rooms are furnished using recycled timber furniture and lit with LED low-consumption lamps, the most sustainable lighting option.
As for wastewater, we have a special Bio-Septic Tank that filters and processes the grey and black water waste into clear, odourless water to assure no ground contamination. The water then goes into another tank which leads the water back into the earth. In the future, we have plans to install systems that allow us to use this water for our garden.
Your room is the place where you can make the biggest (or smallest) sustainable impact during your stay. Here are a few easy ideas:
They say the kitchen is the centre of most homes, and we feel the same here at Seaside Tribe. Most days, you’ll find someone to talk to in the common area, sipping on homemade iced tea or a freshly made coffee or juice. This is also an area where we want to be as sustainable as possible.
Plastic Free & Ethically Sourced
To start, we do our best to source local, ethically produced ingredients that are plastic-free. Of course, it’s not always possible but we’re always on the lookout for better, more sustainable options. We also provide a drinking water refill station, use stainless steel straws, and don’t stock any drinks package in plastic bottles.
Waste Management
We always divide the kitchen waste. We recycle glass bottles, hard plastic, cans and metal, carton and any rogue plastic water bottles. Meanwhile, we have some serious composting going on with organic waste being sent into a compost bin that produces natural fertilizer for our gardens. Food leftovers that can’t be composted, like meat & rice, are given to our dogs and street dogs in the area.
Cleaning Sustainably
When it’s time to clean, we use vinegar, baking soda & other natural products as much as possible. Unfortunately, we can’t currently offer eco-friendly laundry services, but we plan to add this service on in the future.
We specifically chose local tropical plants for our garden. Bali is home to so much beautiful greenery, it made sense to use what’s already here! We switch the lights off after mid-night to save on energy and of course we hope to soon use our recycled grey and black water to water our garden.
As for the pool, our pool water pump is on a timer so that it’s on only as necessary. Right now, the pool is chlorinated, but we hope to be able to use more sustainable options soon. We’re still researching the best options – whether that be UV light filters or saltwater – but it’s a change we hope to make soon.
